Fly reels are one piece of the whole fly fishing outfit (fly rod, reel, line, leader) that is frequently overlooked by anglers. This is understandable. After all, for normal trout fishing, a fly reel generally does little more than just hold line. Unfortunately, that all changes the minute you tag into a big and hungry trout, salmon or bass and the fly line begins to strip out of the fly reel at an alarming rate. At these times, the lowly fly reel becomes a vitally important piece of equipment. During these times, cheap fly reels, those that do little more than just hold line, have a nasty tendency to either fall apart (by locking up) or to cause many a lost fish due to uneven drag that allows the tippet to part company with the fly line. As such, if you will be fly fishing for fish of any size (larger trout, bass, salmon, salt water), it is highly recommended that you invest in a quality fly reel. By getting a good quality fly reel from the outset, you won't have to worry about your fly reel dying on you at the most inopportune of times.
