Sunglasses,
particularly polarized sunglasses, are an essential piece of
fly fishing gear. Polarized sunglasses cut through the glare
the sun reflects on the water, greatly assisting the angler in
locating their dry fly, their nymph or sub-surface features in
the river bottom.
Additionally, polarized
sunglasses, in combination with the various tints available,
also increase visual acuity as well as protecting your eyes from
errant flies, blowing sand, high winds and other stream-side
hazards.
There are lots of cheap
plastic sunglasses for fly fishing on the market today. For beginner
anglers, or for simple dry fly fishing on flat
water, these types of sunglasses work ok. But, if you plan on fishing
in a moving river, use nymphs or fly fish out in the ocean,
getting a good pair of near optically perfect glass sunglasses
is important. The better optics of good fly fishing sunglasses
make
the flies
more visible in these difficult situations. They also are highly
scratch resistent and will last much longer than your cheap discount
store polarized sunglasses.
