Fly Rods : Summary of Fly Rod Action

Summary of Fly Rod Action

The Swan River in Montana

As you can see, the action of a fly rod - and which action is right for you - really depends on what types of fish you will be fishing for, where you will be fishing, and the types of conditions you expect to encounter.

Still confused? Well, I'll go out on a limb and make some recommendations. Unless you fall into any of the following exceptions listed below, I recommend buying a Medium Action/Mid-Flex fly rod, especially if you are a beginner. The great versatility of a medium action fly rod makes it an excellent fly rod for both beginner and expert anglers alike - especially if the angler can only afford or only wants one fly rod.

Of course, there are exceptions. The exceptions to this recommendation are:

  • Fast Action/Tip Flex Fly Rods - If you will be consistently fishing for large fish, need to make long casts or be fishing in windy conditions frequently, then go for a fast action fly rod, as these rods will perform the best in these type of conditions.
  • Slow Action/Full Flex Fly Rods - On the other hand, if small spring creeks and rivers are where you spend your time, or if you continually end up chasing trout using very light tackle, then a slow action fly rod is the best choice.
