Montana is rightly considered
the finest fly fishing destination for spot in the lower 48. Montana
has more trout rivers - all home to native born trout - than any
other state. As such, anglers who plan on fly fishing in Montana
for the first time often end up with overload, as the state is just
so big and has so many fine quality trout waters that new anglers
often don't know where to begin.
Well, that's where these
Montana fishing guidebooks come into play. All of these books shown
below explore the fly fishing waters in Montana to one degree or
another. Using a Montana fishing guidebook as a way to get introduced
to Montana fly fishing is virtually guaranteed to help a visiting
angler both pick a place to start fishing as well as to dramatically
improve the odds that you'll catch something worth remembering.

This Montana fly fishing guidebook is absolutely essential,
repeat essential, for anyone who will be spending time
fishing in Montana. This Montana fishing book covers
EVERY piece of water in Montana that is found west of
the continental divide. For the major rivers, such as
the Blackfoot River, the book provides in-depth information
about how to fish the river, the characteristics of
the river, what hatches occur and what flies to use.
Equally important, for the adventurous person who likes
to find out of the way fishing holes, this book is absolutely
critical - as it lists if those "out of the way"
places have fish in them, and if so, what they have.

This
book provides an excellent overview of fly fishing in
Montana. It does not go into great detail on individual
rivers like some of the other fishing guidebooks do,
but for the angler who is attempting to figure out what
river to fish in Montana, this is an excellent reference
source.

Book
Description from Amazon.Com
This is more of a fishing storybook than a detailed
fly fishing guideboo, as it doesn't break down a river
segment by segment or provide detailed fly fishing advice.
However, it does provide a fair amount of detailed Montana
fly fishing information, although all that information
can be obtained from his other guidebooks. John Holt
is an excellent writer, making this book enjoyable book
to read. As such, when the fly fishing slows down and
the day gets hot, this is an excellent book to read
while sitting along a prime river under a shady tree.
His adventures fly fishing along the Musselshell River
were especially fun to read - although not necessarily
lived through!.

Fishing Gear.Info Comments
For the angler venturing up into the High Country of
the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area, this book is
in invaluable guide - truth be told, it is absolutely
essential. The book will not give an angler any great
new insights into how to catch fish. Instead, where
this guide proves to be worth its weight in gold is
in its thorough descriptions of the lakes - in particular
what kinds of fish, if any, are in the various lakes.
Since hiking, sometimes of considerable distances, is
required to access the lakes in the Absaroka-Beartooth
Wilderness Area, knowing in advance that a particular
lake holds fish proves to be immensely helpful.
